Project 3 for my 2-D Media/Design class.  The concepts included in the full slideshow are the elements of color use, balance, typography, repetition/rhythm, and time, with a focus on “chromatic metamorphosis”.

    Q5 Critique – Metamorphosis Observations
Describe what is potentially happening between the steps. How effective is motion and transition between the seven steps, explain? If the continuity is not effective why is it not working? What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Is there enough contrast between each of the seven images to get a true feeling of chromatic metamorphosis, explain?

    Danielle,
In your project, each sequence depicts less and less of the letter “d” until it is completely gone. As it seems to sink into the grass, the yellow and pink flowers give the impression of growing. The dissipation of the letter and the addition and enlargement of the pink and yellow flowers effectively create motion and transition from sequence to sequence. The quality of your design and composition display an excellent use of typography, color use, space, repetition and rhythm. For example, the letter “d” is in a whimsical font. In addition, the colors you used depict nature and give the feeling of a bright sunny day. Also, the flowers and ladybugs are repeated throughout the sequences in an altering rhythm to create motion. I do not believe, however, that there is enough contrast between each of the seven images to get a true feeling of chromatic metamorphosis. The colors of each image remain of the same value throughout the sequences. Overall, you did a beautiful job!

    Hello Danielle!

    My assigned question is:

    Q2 Critique – Balance

What type of balance is used in the metamorphosis and what is the point of focus? Does either change between the steps or do they remain the same throughout the metamorphosis?

I would say that the balance is equal, with a large point of interest on the left (the sun) being balanced by a large point of interest on the right (the letter.) The letter is the focal point. By the last frame, the flowers on the left have become the focal point, balanced by the flowers on the right. The composition is still balanced but I think it is interesting that the focal point has switched sides from left to right. Well done!

What I see as potentially happening between the steps is that your initial is planting itself into the ground, and this is resulting in the flowers blooming and growing across the image. I felt that the motion and transition between the seven steps was smooth and effective because there were not any abrupt jumps and it all seemed to move rather smoothly. I saw that the continuity was well thought out and gave a sense of peace. The overall quality of the composition and design was effective at portraying your message of how you view yourself. I felt that there was enough contrast between the beginning and end image to get a true sense of chromatic metamorphosis, but between each of the seven images, there could have been more contrast. The end image was very chromatically different from the first in the grass turning to sky, and the purple flowers turning yellow and pink. However, the grass seemed to cover much of the image through much of the composition, and it would have been a little better if that could have been changed somehow earlier. I really thought your work was well thought out and had a very nice, peaceful presentation.

    Danielle,
    Q4 Critique – Repetition/Rhythm
Where is repetition and or rhythm used in the sequences? Is the use of Repetition/Rhythm effective? Explain.
Repetition is used in these images by the use of the ladybugs and flowers. The lady bugs maintain their distance from each other while at the same time progressing across the images from the left to the right. The linear rhythm of the ladybugs was apparent as the images progressed, which directed the viewers eye towards the right. The repetition of the flowers that grew on the left of the images gave basic repetition that was strong since they were identical to each other. The sky in the background was an example of nonlinear rhythm since the clouds filled the background without any apparent pattern. I felt that the use of the repetition and rhythm was effective as it directed the viewers eye to the initial going into the ground and the resulting flower growth.

    Thanks, Jeremy Hicks

    Q1 Critique -Using Color

Name three ways using color enhances the chromatic metamorphosis from sequence 1 to sequence 7. Describe the actual colors used and how the hues change. Include discussion of value such as shades and/or tints if evident.

    Hello, Danielle.
The color used on background is changed green to skyblue with slide down the background in sequence 1 to 7. Grass background color is little warm color side so I can tell it is moved warm colors to cool colors. In different way to background the foreground fills with flowers that have variety colors but it is warm side colors. There also Monochromatic color combination in purple flower on right side of image. Purple flowers also are changed to tints colors. The color combination of complementary color thru sequence 1 to 7 gives contrast in the image so this makes a value. When I click fast, it looks like actually move and growth, I like the way you use colors.
